Part of what I like about vacation is the planning involved. I love putting an itinerary together and researching for places of interests. It somehow sets the excitement and the mood right.
But part of me somehow yearns for an adventure. Just pack my bags and go to a foreign place unplanned.....

Well I would say a planned trip is good for time management. Yours truly have done OK for not really researching what to do and where to visit, most of the time because I go alone and there is no one else to help prepare it
The upside from my experience is that the locals MIGHT tell you an amazing place which MAY not be listed anywhere and that would be really amazing.
Sometimes its cheaper or better to be guided eg take up last minute tours, local tours (especially those independent or smaller ones) may have interesting itineraries. Something which I learned in my latest trip!
